Math Jam 2014 Reflection
The experience I had at Math Jam 2014 was way better than I thought it would be. I expected to just learn math but there was more. We were separated into classes with tutors, had different workshops that taught us more about college, and engaged in fun activities that not only taught us math, but let us meet and connect with new people. In class our tutors taught us math with games that didn’t even seem like lessons. I enjoyed the workshops the most, they had us interact with different people and find common interests that we had. This lead to the making of new friends, which made the transition into college a lot easier cause now while I’m on campus in a sea of strangers sometimes I come across familiar faces.
My tutor was Ariana. Since she is a student as well she was really able to connect with us and tell us what we are going to experience in our first year. She was in our shoes once, so hearing her experiences and getting advice from her as really helped with school so far. The friends I made during Math Jam are like no other, in a good way. They all have completely different personalities, backgrounds, passions, and interests. Yes we were all different, but what brought us all together is that we all had one goal in common; to get an education and become what we desire to be.
Overall, Math Jam made the transition into college a lot more simple and less frightful. I admit I did not want to go when I first heard of it, but on the last day I was a bit depressed that it came to an end so quickly. It boosted my excitement and lowered my anxiety for college. It gave us an advantage before the semester started. I’m really glad I went to Math Jam. Everything we learned there will be put to use in our journey through college.
