Dear 1st year Pathways Student,
Hi, my name is Selena Jimenez and I am currently enrolled in the Pathways program. Pathways is a program for first and second year students to aid them during their time here at PCC. Choosing to be in this program is a great first step towards your college success. From here you will meet new people and make new friends, have tutors available to you when you need them, and other useful resources that you will need during the semesters.
Your first semester will be stressful because it is a big shift going from high school into college. You hear about not getting enough sleep, the freshman 15, being stressed, and never having much time for anything else. I’m not going to lie, most of this is true. As a first year, you never know what to expect. Sometimes you will feel that you have everything under control, and the next week thing are lost and out of your control. It will be hard, but with a program like Pathways the burden is not as heavy. Your mentors, tutors, and coaches are available to help you when you feel you have lost control.
In my midterm reflection you can see that rewriting my note and keeping them organized helps so much when studying. My study implement for that class worked really well. Sometimes we aren’t as successful, as with my math exam. I didn’t use the same implement and was not happy with the results. This goes to show that there will be times where you fail, but you can’t let them stop you. When this happens look back at how you prepared for it and make some changes hat will make you receive a better outcome the next time.
A quote that I really looked to a lot was “We think we can multitask, but we can’t.” This was from an article we read about metacognition. This turned out to be true. Right now you may think that you can do other things while studying or doing homework and still manage to understand what you’re doing, when in reality you’re not learned. I learned this from my own experiences, and that told me that when I need to focus I need to be focusing without trying to do anything else.
Another quote would be from The Madonnas of Echo Park, “You can’t over protect her.” I chose this because in high school, many of us had over protective parents who would treat you almost like a child and now that you’re in college they can’t do that anymore. It’s time for you to experience things on your own now, and it starts here.
Working in groups in college is a bit more difficult because of scheduling but isn’t as bad as it may seem. It helps a lot with projects so instead of it being a one man job you have a team to help you work on it. Working in study groups helps too because sometimes you gain information that you might have missed in class. Groups are not bad as long as you find people who are willing to put in as much effort as you are.
College 1 is a class that does require a lot of work to be done. It does help with coming up with new methods to learn and studying that you can use in your other courses. It also helps you better understand college life, and how we work mentally in college.
I found that going to the library was extremely helpful. It gave me a quite place to study and helped me find many of the resources for then rest o my courses. The teaching learning center is also helpful as well because you get free tutoring and there are computers there whenever you need them. So take advantage of your resources!
One misconception about college that isn’t true: you won’t have fun unless you party. I don’t party, but I’ve still managed to have fun with the new friends that I’ve made. So relax and enjoy your first year!
Sincerely,
Selena Jimenez
